Alternate title: OH MIKHAIL BAKHTIN I HATE YOU I HATE YOU AND YOU ARE NECESSARY BUT I HATE YOU.

Actually, Bakhtin is one of the less esoteric critics I’ve come across lately.  But when he starts talking about how “the word acknowledges only itself” and “acknowledges another word, one lying outside its own context, only as the neutral word of language,” I get a little grumpy.
